A quieter alternative to a hotel near Lockerbie, Gretna Green or Dumfries

If you’re looking for a hotel near Lockerbie, Gretna Green or Dumfries, Moffat is well worth the short drive. Instead of a roadside chain, you’ll stay at Moffat’s oldest inn, established in 1568, in a pretty Dumfriesshire town. Lockerbie is about 16 miles away (20–25 minutes by car), Dumfries about 21 miles (25–30 minutes) and Gretna Green about 31 miles (35–40 minutes).

It makes a good base if you’re heading to a wedding at Gretna Green, visiting family in Dumfries or Lockerbie, or simply need a proper night’s sleep before the rest of the journey.

Travelling as a family? Our family room sleeps four, with a super-king bed and bunks for the youngsters, and cots and Z-beds are available. Guests with additional mobility needs can choose our pavement-level Garden Deluxe King, which has a walk-in shower. See all our rooms.

A full Scottish breakfast is available for £9.95 per person, so you can set off well fed in the morning.

Dinner and a pint after the drive

Once you’ve arrived, there’s no need to get back in the car. Our bistro serves hearty Scottish food, with vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-free guests well catered for, and every Sunday we serve a traditional Sunday carvery. In the bar you’ll find at least three local cask ales, including beers from Lowland Brewing in Lockerbie, and a list of 33 wines.

Food is served from Wednesday to Sunday; the bar and restaurant are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check our opening hours before you travel, and book a table to be sure of a seat.

Travelling with your dog?

We’re a dog-friendly hotel, so the whole family can stop over. Dogs are welcome in our bar and in our pavement-level garden rooms, which make late-evening and early-morning walks easy (a one-off £30 fee per stay applies). Find out more about dog-friendly breaks in Dumfries & Galloway.

Following in Robert Burns’s footsteps

Breaking the journey at the Black Bull is nothing new. Robert Burns enjoyed many a riotous visit to the inn when passing through to Dumfries, and the verse he once engraved on one of our window panes is displayed on our outside wall today. Read more in our history.
